"Emily's Wings" - ballet suite
by Nicholas Wing, composer/author

Synopsis -

The year is 1902, the city is covered in a soft blanket of snow and a very special baby is about to be born.  But something is very wrong and the mother and her baby are in distress.  The baby isn't breathing and they rush to take a carriage to the hospital.  As the carriage races through the snowfall, Emily's mother says a prayer and draws her final breath.  Suddenly, the baby takes her first breath, as the snow falls into the still racing carriage.

Years later, Emily is now a young woman, and is helping to support her father who works building the skyscrapers of the city.  As she was growing up, her father told her that her mother often dreamed of flying and that she was Emily's guardian angel.  Emily loved hearing stories about her mother and grew up with her own imaginary wings.  One day while her father is working on a skyscraper, Emily discovers that her imaginary wings were not imaginary at all.  Emily's wings are real, and she's going to need them for this adventure.

Emily discovers that her wings are the most brilliant when she writes in her journal, and so she begins writing stories and sending them to the city's major newspaper.  Soon Emily is
moonlighting as a writer and covering with her wings stories of sorrow and of hope for the city.
When Emily cries, the city sobs with her, when she mourns, the city stands still and when she laughs, her readers spirits are renewed.  Above all, she writes stories which will give her readers hope for the future.  Emily knows that, like her very breath, her wings are a gift from her loving mother that is to be shared with the world, and she will use these gifts to defeat a 'wicked widow', save her father and perhaps even the city itself.

"The Country Nook Adventure" Ballet Suite – Synopsis
By Nicholas Wing, Composer/Author

Synopsis -

Once upon a time, the Poor Shepherd was tending his flock on a quiet pastoral countryside.  The Shepherd passed his time reading of the heroes of ages past and dreaming of great and noble adventures, and he longed for the day that he could leave his quiet nook and embark on an adventure.  One day, to the dismay of his Loyal Sheepdog, he noticed his sheep had gone astray following after a trail of poison clover and he set out in search of them.  Along a treacherous path he noticed a cloaked stranger, who offered to help the Poor Shepherd to find his sheep.  The cloaked stranger said that he had seen them pass by, but did not know where the sheep had gone, and that he would stay in the village until they were found.   As time passed, the sheep never returned and the shepherd now weary with worry for his sheep, again crossed the stranger who offered to help.

A dark cloud began to overshadow the village, and to his dismay more and more sheep continued to vanish.  The Shepherd and his Loyal Sheepdog set out upon their quest to find the lost sheep that had followed after the poison clover, and it was then that the Cloaked Figure initiated "The March of the Crimendium." Soon all of the villages in the kingdom were plagued by the mysterious Crimendium, and the hue and cry of anarchical crowds suddenly extinguished the peace of the countryside.  Fear, darkness and treachery consumed the townspeople, and the Cloaked Figure fomented the crowds declaring himself their leader.  He used his power over the townspeople to take away the Badge of Trust from the Sheriff and to replace trusted Doctor Dawn.  Firmly entrenched, no one dared to stand up to the power of the murderous Cloaked Figure who had cast an evil spell on the townspeople. But don't worry retreat is not defeat, and the Sheriff and Doctor Dawn must find a way to save the town and restore peace to the countryside.  The final line was crossed when the very lives of the Sheriff's son and grandchildren were threatened , and their faces placed upon a stack of dart boards, by the Cloaked Figure and his evil Crimendium, and he knows that the only way to save his family is to bring the Cloaked Figure to justice.

The Poor Shepherd returned to town exhausted from his search and it seemed that the situation was hopeless as he slumped in his chair nearing despair.  Suddenly, in a moment of inspiration, it came to him.  The Shepherd cleverly fastened a mystical invisible string to a shiny gold coin and allowed it to be stolen by the Cloaked Figure.  The next evening, the Shepherd took his staff and a torch to light the path, and set out following the invisible string which led him toward the lair of the Cloaked Figure.  There he found that the Cloaked Figure and his followers had built a Great Dark Pillar, and on each block of the pillar was the name of a vice to which a multitude of the Poor Shepherd's sheep had been tied.  Seeing that the Great Dark Pillar was too powerful for the Shepherd to destroy by himself, he took his torch and climbed to its peak and set the torch ablaze.  In his rage, the Cloaked Figure ascended the pillar to put out the fire that was consuming the ropes which tied the sheep.  The Shepherd then took his staff and beckoned his sheep home.  A wide net of entangled ropes now pulled indefatigably against the Great Dark Pillar.  And the love of the sheep for their Shepherd was so great, that it toppled the Great Dark Pillar upon the Cloaked Figure and the Crimendium and there they were buried among the names of the vices which were now broken and shattered.  The Torch lay burning in the rubble and the Shepherd retrieved it.  In place of the Pillar a watchtower was built, and like a candle blazing in the darkness, it shined forever.  It was then that the clouds announced the dawning Sun, and that light had been restored to the countryside.  -The End.

"The Great Light" is dedicated to Sheriff Phalen, as well as the heroes of Operation Spider Web which brought to justice the 44 member $60 million Lopez Lemus DTO in Chester County, PA.  D.A. Hogan stated that these are ruthless criminal organizations that "kill cops, kill judges, kill prosecutors and don't think twice about killing civilians."  If it were not for the bravery and integrity of Sheriff Phalen, the multinational drug cartel DTO that moved onto my aunt's street could have also inflicted 20 years of murder and terror on the community.

"A Winter's Gift" Ballet Suite - Synopsis
By Nicholas Wing, Composer/Author

The first scene opens with the lighting of a candle and Elinda's ("Eli") mother placing the "Winter's Gift," lovingly beneath the tree.  The family gathers to open their gifts and finally its Eli's turn.  She opens her gift and finds that it is a beautiful old music box, which plays a song that her mother taught her.  She winds the music box and they all dance with joy!  Elinda's mother suddenly grows faint and falls ill, and in later scenes is replaced by a wicked stepmother. The wicked stepmother casts an evil spell on her father and wishes to crush the spirit of Elinda who stands in her way. She recognizes the mystical qualities of the music box, given to Elinda by her mother, and plots to steal or destroy it as well as all of the music boxes in the land!  Eli soon discovers the true nature of the Wicked Stepmother and her evil plot.  Now that she has been un-shrouded, the Wicked Stepmother attempts to surround Eli with her dark followers in order to block her light from shining and to make Eli appear to be the evil one.  When her plot is foiled, the Wicked Stepmother decides to poison Eli's drink to discredit her, make Eli appear to be crazy, and possibly even to kill her!  But don't worry, the Wicked Stepmother does not triumph in the end!

Elinda flees into the blizzard to escape the Wicked Stepmother.  She must now warn the others of the evil plot to destroy all of the Music Boxes.  Eli is now safe and the Guardians convene to decide who will go to rescue the Mystical Music Box from the Wicked Stepmother. This is a very dangerous mission, so they decide to draw straws.  But before they can finish, the Lion steps forward to volunteer. The Guardians gesture to the Lion, as if to say, "but how will you do this?" The Lion smiles, pulls out a wolf's fur and puts it on. They gesture to the Lion to remain silent while on his dangerous mission. The Lion departs knowing that he is unlikely to return alive.  In the final showdown at the town square, the wicked stepmother is revealed in her true form before all of the townspeople and is defeated once and for all.

I use the celesta extensively throughout to represent the music box. It is my artistic response to the abysmally dark plots of Ravel's L'enfant et les sortilèges and Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle. Unlike the terribly dark endings in Ravel and Bartok's works, my story ends with truth, beauty and light, which prevail over the wicked stepmother.

Dedicated in loving memory of my mother, Elinda, and in tribute to Irene Danner who bravely risked her life to rescue her family from the Gestapo during WWII.

"Job's Prayer" - A One Act Ballet
By Nicholas Wing, Composer/Author

A solitary principal male dancer is seated center stage.  As the introductory chords play, he rises and seems to awaken and blossom from a closed seated position.  When the melody enters against the arpeggio he begins his dance; his expression is noble, confident and strong.  Soon silhouette figures appear from the wings and they surround Job.  He initially overcomes the figures, but is surrounded again and is utterly overwhelmed.  The dancers gesture stabbing and other movements representing an onslaught and Job eventually succumbs and is downtrodden from grief, fear and exhaustion.  To seal his defeat, he is blindfolded by one of the dark figures.  Now lying on the floor and blinded, his three friends enter and surround him; he reaches for them, but they turn away one by one.  In his despair he returns to his original closed pose.  Slowly, he raises his weary arms into the air as if calling out to the Lord for help.  The spotlight shines upon Job, he regains his sight as he looks toward the light and he rises slowly and deliberately to a restored disposition of valor.  The dark figures again emerge, and beaming under a brilliant fluorescence Job defeats them by expanding its circumference and the dark figures now recoil before the light.
His life is renewed and the darkness is defeated forever.
